Welcome to The Learning Center
of Newton County

What is The Learning Center?

The Learning Center is the only nonprofit addressing Newton County's literacy rate by providing programs that help children birth to age 5 to become ready to read.

Statistics indicate that reading ability is directly linked to the likelihood of a child dropping out of school, living in poverty, or being involved in criminal activity and passing this lifestyle on to their own children.

The Learning Center's programs are prompted by research showing that the stimulation young children receive as they learn to talk determines whether they will become successful readers.

Exposure to reading, music, and good nutrition are proven to influence babies' brain growth and language development.

Our programs include:

  • Leap Into Books - Better Brains for Babies Workshops for parents & the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for children under age 4 1/2
  • Make Music with Me - 3 to 5 year olds build language skills through activities set to music
  • Lovin' Spoonfuls - Video-based nutrition workshops for parents of children birth to age 6
  • Young Readers Theatre - for children age 4 to 8, reading scripted stories with others strengthens emergent reading skills
  • Used Book Drive - Gently used children's books are distributed to families in need
  • Prepare for Success - Initiatives to identify and promote quality childcare options
  • Literacy Festival 2008 - family festival with literacy-based activities and concert sponsored by the Arts Association in Newton County

How YOU can help us provide our programs to more Newton County families:

  • Host a program in your place of business, church, school or community group.
  • Sponsor a child to cover the cost of Imagination Library books at $30 per year.
  • Attend a fundraising event such as Ladies Big Bunco, Bikers for Books motorcyle ride, or our annual Silent/Live auction.
  • Volunteer be a program leader, help with office tasks, or participate in a board committee.
