Welcome to

The Learning Center
of Newton County

What is The Learning Center?

The Learning Center is the only nonprofit addressing Newton County's literacy rate by providing programs that help children birth to age 5 to become ready to read.

Statistics indicate that low reading ability is directly linked to the likelihood of a child dropping out of school, living in poverty, or being involved in criminal activity and passing this lifestyle on to their own children.

The Learning Center's programs are prompted by research showing that the stimulation young children receive as they learn to talk determines whether they will become successful readers.

Exposure to reading, music, and good nutrition are proven to influence babies' brain growth and language development.

Our programs include:

  • Leap Into Books - Workshops for parents & caregivers of children birth to age 5 teach about babies' brain growth and activities adults can do to build reading-readiness
  • Lovin' Spoonfuls - Video-based nutrition workshops for parents of children birth to age 6 teach how to build healthy eating habits
  • Young Readers Theatre - for children pre-K to 3rd grade, reading and writing scripted stories with others strengthens emergent reading skills
  • Read It Again - New and gently used children's books are distributed to families in need
  • Newton County Literacy Festival - free family event with literacy-based activities, a sidewalk chalk art competition and concert sponsored by the Arts Association in Newton County.  2010 event is scheduled for September 11 from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm.
  • Ready, Set, School Clubs - 10-week series that provides a guided sampler of literacy-building activities for parents and their children under 5

".....the likelihood that a child will succeed in the first grade depends most of all on how much he has already learned about reading before getting there.”
